I am of slovak descent, and my mom, born and raised in Prague, always told us that it must be placed near the door, as it is a tradition., I just wanted to know why the tradition.

The famed statue of the Infant of Prague suffered damage when the Carmelites were banished from Prague. The Carmelites did return back to Prague and it was then that brother Cyril discovered the damage to the arms of his much loved Infant of Prague. In his daily beseechings to the Miraculous Infant, he was instructed by the Infant Himself to be placed at the front door where a gentleman would enter, see the damage and pay for it. He did !
